ETHNIC ENCLAVES, DIVERSITY, AND MULTICULTURALISM: SHOULD ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN RESEARCHERS CARE?

How should ethnic enclaves be viewed, studied, and understood? Should environmental design researchers care about them? In addressing these I review three views of the ethnic enclave: as economic system, adjustment, yearning for past experience, and propose a fourth: as socio-physical phenomenon, and briefly describe Little Saigon in Southern California. The implications and importance of studying ethnic enclaves I address in the conclusion with a discussion of implications for theory, recommending "cognoscent planning" for a theoretical stance, and for method a non-positivistic, idiographic approach with the aim of verstehen and gyan.
