The handheld instrumentation market traditionally has been populated by fixed-function products such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, data logger, and gas analyzers. However, several factors are emerging to create new opportunities for the development of programmable handheld and mobile data acquisition and instrumentation devices: 1. Growing sales of mass-market smart handheld devices, such as PDAs and cell phones. 2. New peripheral interface standards such as Springboard, and Secure Digital plus existing standards such as PCMCIA, Compact Flash, USB and Firewire. 3. Emerging wireless standards including IEE 802.11 and Bluetooth.
