A general block differential method for estimating two-dimensionalmotion in video sequences is presented. A probabilistic interpretationis given, and other existing methods in the same category aregeneralized by the introduction of a parametric model to compute motioninside blocks as well as an explicit communication between disjointblocks. The solution algorithm also generalizes other algorithms whichformulate the estimation through a linearized version of the displacedpel difference. The method is applied to motion-compensatedinterpolation of a video sequence. Very good results are obtained forspecific implementations of the general method. A heuristicblock-splitting scheme used to enhance block estimation around movingboundaries is discussed
