Over the past fifty years, numerous attempts have been made to model the complex phenomena occurring within a copper flash smelting furnace. Unfortunately, due to the extreme complexity of its process, much of this work has had only a modest influence on the design and operation of commercial flash furnaces. This paper suggests that mathematical mdoeling will have an increasing influence on flash furnace design and operation in the future.
