Segmented polyurethane has been used in a number of blood-contacting devices, such as catheters, heart assist pumps, and artificial heart because of its excellent mechanical properties and relatively good blood tolerability. However, the antithrombogenicity of polyurethane has to be improved for the greater biomedical application. To overcome this requirement, heparin, which is well known as the anticoagulant, has been frequently used as the immobilizing biomolecule.
