In the oleochemistry the application of pervaporation membranes for dehydration of alcohol containing mixtures seems very attractive. Also, their use in catalytic esterification processes has a number of advantages, a.o. improved yield. However, in the past polymeric membranes appeared not to work very well in this type (of (batch-wise) operation. The membranes adapt too slowly to the reaction conditions while robostness is relatively poor.
