Stabilizing niobium/titanium (Nb/Ti) low temperature superconductor wire with aluminum instead of copper reduces the overall weight up to 50 percent. Spiral wrapping of aluminum onto a core of Nb/Ti fibers embedded in a copper matrix was investigated as a cost-effective production method. The challenges of spiral wrapping high-purity aluminum onto a relatively fine wire and then bonding the assembly, without flux, are discussed.
