For effective use of low temperature waste heat and solar thermal energy, sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT)-based phase change materials (PCMs) were prepared. Cationic surfactants were added to SAT to prevent itssupercooling phenomenon. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements revealed that thesupercooling degree of SAT can be reduced to less than 10 °C by the surfactants. Heat storage and releasecharacteristics of the PCM were investigated with a heat storage tank containing hot water and the PCMpackaged into aluminium-laminated resin bags. The PCM stored and released its sensible and latent heat intemperature range between 50 °C and 70 °C. The amount of heat storage and release by the PCM was morethan 300 MJ×m~(-3). That was more than 3.5 times higher than that by water with the same volume in the sametemperature range.
