Cooperative Ambient Backscatter Communications in the Future Internet of Things

Promoting the development of the economy and society, the Internet of Things (IoTs) is receiving wide attention. However, the devices of the IoTs are largely restricted by their power supply methods. As such, ambient backscatter communications (ABCs) are extensively discussed by industry and academia. In order to further improve the ability of coverage, data transmission, and other aspects of ABCs, this paper sheds lights on the cooperative ambient backscatter communications (CABCs), which integrate cooperative communications and ambient backscatter communications, and reviews many relative literatures, where showing that CABCs can provide performance gains compared to ABCs. Furthermore, some future research directions are also given. The future study may include constructing reasonable communication models of the CABC systems for the IoTs, collaboratively optimizing the use of the involved radio resources, overcoming the uncertainty of the environment to ensure robust and secure communications, and so on. This paper will provide reference to the use of the CABC techniques in the future IoTs.
