Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease patients with Community Acquired Pneumonia: relationship between antibiotic consumption and antimicrobial susceptibilities of respiratory pathogens
Despite the acceptance of the evidence that the use of antibiotics leads to the development of resistance in microorganisms, the many variables involved in this and its complicated handling, make it difficult to correlate properly the consumption and the resistance. However, there is consensus on the need to evaluate the use of antimicrobials and measuring the resistance of the main pathogens, in order to control this important problem, which is the development of bacterial resistances. The aim of this study was to quantify the use of antimicrobials over the years 2006 to 2013 and compared with the susceptibility pattern of the most common respiratory pathogens in this period. In our hospital, the use of betalactams has remained above the quinolones, although levofloxacin has suffered a rise in consumption, by its progressive use in respiratory infections. However, the percentage of isolates susceptible to levofloxacin increased in any of the microorganisms tested, making it therefore an effective alternative in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia.
