The SOLB plant is located in the south west of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the development area of Jazan Economic City, 1 km from the shore of the Red Sea, about 60 km from the nearest industrial port of Jazan Town. The plant is strategically located on the Red Sea shipping routes and there are plans to increase the inland connection routes by constructing new roads to the east as well as to the north towards Jeddah. The plant was originally conceived for the production of construction bars for the local market starting from domestic scrap, and sponge iron for the international market. For safety and easy handling, HBI was preferred to DRI in the early stages of the project. Today production is based on both HBI and DRI blended with different percentages of metal scrap.
