For an optimized production program in the hot rolling mill accuracy of slab dimension is essential. If the width is too high compared to the requirement of the customer the sheets have to be trimmed which intern causes a lack in yield. If the slabs are too narrow they are useless for the production process.At ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG in Duisburg the slab width is monitored by laser measurement. Therefore two lasers perform a triangular scan of each narrow face and based on this data the slab width is calculated. The scanning device is mounted downstream of the skid before the slabs are stored in the slab yard. This measurement is done about 50 minutes after the steel is cast in the mould.
