This study was conducted to determine the effect of tire inflation pressure on real-time estimation of the rating cone index (RCI) of a soil using wheel sinkage. It was postulated that the tire diameter, tire deflection, section height, and section width change with tire inflation pressure, resulting in changes in wheel sinkage and slip, which are inputs to the equation for RCI estimation proposed by Nam and Kim. Experiments were carried out to measure wheel sinkage and slip at different tire inflation pressures under different soil conditions. Tire deflection were also measured at different tire inflation pressures. In sandy soil conditions, wheel sinkage and slip increased with the tire inflation pressure. As a result of the test, wheel singkage and slip increased as the tire inflation pressure increased. The test results were input to the equation of RCI estimation to confirm the predicted value of RCI according to tire inflation pressure change. It was confirmed that the most accurate prediction was made in the air pressure range of 90%~120% of the tire proper inflation pressure.
