Advances in the design and simulation of large off-road vehicles (construction, mining, agriculture etc.) have increased the need for accurate models of large off-road tyres. Conventional passenger vehicle tyre parameterization test rigs are physically too small to parameterize these large tyres. This paper describes the development and construction of static and dynamic test rigs specifically for the parameterization of large tyres. These test rigs are used to obtain valuable tyre parameters used to create tyre models (e.g. FTire, Pacejka Magic Formula etc.) for large tyres. These test rigs can also be used to validate tyre models. The static test rig can accommodate tyres of up to 4m in diameter at lateral, longitudinal and vertical loads of up to 1MN. The dynamic test trailer can test tyres up to 2.1m diameter at vertical loads of up to 75 kN and speeds up to 80 km/h under different load, slip, slip angle and camber angle conditions on any suitable test surface. Wheel force transducers form a critical part of these test rigs. Typical test results obtained from a large off-road tyres are discussed.
