PREVENTING OVER TREATMENT AT: SURGERY, EMERGENCY CANCER REFERRAL CENTERS

Veterinarians struggle with concerns of overtreatment as patients age and medicine becomes more advanced. There is a need to distinguish patients in the final years of decline and to be mindful (Coumins 2015). The AVMA has been petitioned to declare the 5th Stage of Life as End of Life because it is distinct and it can happen at any age. Carers are committed to support their pets when they get sick and as they age. The diagnosis of cancer, its treatment, recurrences and relapses will become a more common clinical dilemma that confronts questions "Is it too much surgery? Is it overtreatment?" What can generalists do to prevent over-treatment of their patients at surgery, emergency and cancer Veterinary Referral Centers (VRC)?
