摘要

Orthopedic trauma cases present some unique considerations when it comes to choosingthe necessity of an antimicrobial and, when necessary, the appropriate antimicrobial to use.Staphylococcus sp. are generally thought to be the most common clinically relevant organismencountered on skin of dogs and thus antimicrobial prophylaxis is directed towards them. Trauma in general, is known to be a potent inflammatory stimulus , a potential for septic foci and can have a significant impact on hemostasis so it is prudent for the surgeon to consider these potential complications when managing these patients and choosing an antimicrobial. While the tendency may be to focus on the orthopedic injury and its repair, careful evaluation of other systems is required (e.g. respiratory system - aspiration pneumonia; superficial wounds) as they may also represent Ufe threatening comorbidities.
