Application of ~(222)Rn as Partition Radiotracer in Petroleum Reservoirs

The present study aims at developing a natural partition radiotracer potentially useful for estimating the amount of oil present in a matrix rock. The evaluation of the Residual Oil Saturation (SOR) in oilfields requires that the partition coefficients (Kp) have been previously measured. Tests have been carried with the 222Rn isotope, as the radiotracer. Radon partition coefficients were determined in laboratory tests, in two-phase systems of water and either petroleum or other organic species such as toluene, benzene, and octanol. In order to carry out these measurements, a Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) system has be implemented. The tests have been run at a constant flow-rate, varying the residence time and the temperature A Lucas cell system has been utilized for the measurement of the 222Rn specific activities.
