Variations in Criteria Pollutants and Deposition Fluxes of Trace Elements in Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, Mexico

Wet and dry deposition fluxes for trace elements at Monterrey City were estimated using an automated sampler called DAS (Dry deposition on aqueous surface). Sampling was conducted from January to December 2012. An evident association between Zn-Cu and Fe-Ni was observed, indicating that these pairs of elements had their origin in common sources. Fe and Cu could have geochemical component, however, from their relationship with Zn and Ni, it was evident that they were also emitted from anthropogenic sources (vehicular sources and metallurgic industry). Calcium and sodium levels were high; suggesting a significant contribution from crustal and due to Monterrey City is frequently exposed to maritime air masses from Gulf of Mexico. Relationship between criteria pollutants and trace elements was assessed. Total N and S deposition fluxes in this study (9.74 and 6.73 Kg ha~(-1) yr~(-1), respectively) exceeded the critical values reported for sensitive European ecosystems.
