Low prototype availability and decreasing development times require the drivetrain development department to take a different and more flexible approach to solving their tasks. A four wheel drive vehicle dynamometer is an effective device in order to give a safe statement on mechanical resilience of the drive train at an early stage of development. Hereby the testing of all relevant drive train components under realistic conditions can already be carried out at the start of development despite the non-existence of vehicle engine and chassis. Due to the increased electrification of drive train systems the dynamometer test program demands are becoming considerably more complex. The reason being is all components are simultaneously tested with the same various failure mechanisms yet they may have opposing demands. On these grounds instead of real time trails more and more dynamic simulation trials are performed on four wheel drive dynamometers. This technology is able to simulate a realistic vehicle operation ensuring a precise recreation of damage mechanisms ("Road to Rig"). Prerequisite for this, is to achieve an as accurate as possible recreation of vehicle, tire, driver and track. The generated software is integrated into the dynamometer hardware by means of "X in the Loop" (XiL) which allows for maximum test quality and minimization of down time. This is possible through an adaptive dynamometer which prevents unrealistic driving situations in order to reduce the down time to a minimum developed at Dr.-Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG. Latest dynamometer technologies with a low number of interfaces, high versatility and dynamics as well as an ideal recreation of the "real world" are basis for the realisation of these prerequisites.
