RECOGNIZABILITY OF RURAL ROADS IN THE NETHERLANDS

Predictability by a recognizable road design is an important safety principle in the Netherlands. This requires sufficient distinction between road types and the design elements should support the right expectations. SWOV has examined the recognizability of roads by means of a photo-categorisation study. It is concluded that the distinctiveness of road types may be improved further by a higher level of uniformity of road design per road type. At the moment, only a few road design elements elicit the right expectations. Information can compensate for the lack of recognizability of road types until the layout of the various road categories is sufficiently distinguishable and supporting the correct expectations.
