The decision taken by the government in the late 1970s to build the Afsin Elbistan A power station can be considered as the beginning of lignite-based power generation in Turkey. The Natural Draught Cooling Towers specified for this station are the first hyperbolic concrete towers to be built in this country, they also paved the way for the use of plastic foils as the cooling fill. Later, in order to comply with the Turkish Air Quality Control Regulation (AQCR) issued in 1986, it was necessary to consider the integration of flue gas desulphurization plants (FGDs) during the design phase of the Afsin Elbistan B power station, with the cleaned gas being discharged via natural draught cooling towers. This is the first installation of its kind in Turkey which meets not only economic but also environmental requirements. The reasoning behind the application of this solution is presented here.
