Using traditional technologies to decrease the reduced sulfur gases that give kraft pulp mills their characteristic odor to levels undetectable by the human nose would be a financial burden on the mill with no return on investment. Recent studies have shown green liquor dregs to have promise as a cheap, readily available sorbent for such a purpose. Laboratory experiments have shown that a packed bed of dregs can reduce hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan concentrations to undetectability continuously for extended periods. A mill trial has verified results, and a mechanism for removal is under investigation.
