Nonwoven are used in a large number of coated and laminated fabric applications such as in upholstery backings, shoe components, safety equipments, luggage components and wall coverings. Because of the faster method of production, it is economical to use nonwovens compared to other traditional fabrics. Nowovens can be produced by different methods such as spunbonding, thermal bonding and needle punching. The structure and properties of some of the commonly used nonwovens will be discussed. Special emphasis will be given to spunbond fabrics from polypropylenes based on our research at the Textile and Nonwoven Development Center (TANDEC) laboratory at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
