Eli Lilly and Company utilizes a mas balance as a method to track solvent usage at their manufacturing and pilot plant locations. While the mass balance provides accurate usage information, it is not useful as a tool for rapid identification and quantitation of fugitive Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). As government regulations and permittign requirements demanded more specific information, it was obvious that Eli Lilly needed to design a system for rapid identification and quantitation of fugitive VOCs.
