TECTONIC EVOLUTION OF THE TURPAN-HAMI BASIN

Basin tectonic evolution history reveals the tectonic environment which controls sedimen-tary condition in the geological times. The formation of basin tectonics is closely related to basin resources, since it directly controls the occurrence, bearing, covering and the quantity of oil and gas. In the light of tectonic background and geodynamic environment analysis, 6 evolution stages can be recognized. ① Devonian-Early Permian, the stage of palaeo-ocean basin-relict sea; ② Late Permian-Triassic, the foreland basin stage; ③ Early Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, the basin formation stage of piggyback basin; ④ Late Yanshanian, piggyback basin tectonics formation stage( Ⅰ ) ; ⑤ Early Tertiary, the "pan-Junggar" basin formation stage (piggyback basin) ;⑥ Early Pleistocene, piggyback basin formation stage (Ⅱ ). The background and mechanism for the formation of basin and range tectonics have been discussed.
