Horizontal drills and their cost effective use for characterizing and remediating under obstructions

A survey completed in during the summer of 1995 indicates that rhere have been more than 400 horizontal environmental wells installed for subsurface remediation. This paper investigates the costs of installing a horizontal well and for obtaining subsurface samples using a directional drilling rig. Two case studies are presented that illustrate the diversity of horizontal well installations and their associated costs. Furthermore, it was found that the costs of obtaining soil samples using a directional drilling rig is based on a daily drilling rate. The daily drilling rates of two distinct systems are discussed.
