DESIGNING A SPATIAL POSITIONING TOOL FOR AUGMENTED REALITY APPLICATIONS

In augmented reality (AR), images from simulations and of the substantial background are synthesized to construct an imaginary theme. Most AR applications have focused on the versatility and capability of the image fusion, and done little exploration on realtime interaction among the user, simulated images, and the reality background. Their input devices are, therefore, not adequate to perform the joint interaction. An application of such purpose should make use of the reality background as a refrernce, capture user intention from their intuitive inputs, and create precise simulated images in realtime. This research attempts to develop a spatial positioning tool that will associate direct hand motions with functional symbols to perform 3D spatial design. Users may operate a simple hand-held tool with intuitive motions to accomplish works of professional. In practice, workflows that support 3D editing are developed using Virtools and ARToolKit to facilitate the tasks. A simple hand-held tool is also designed to manipulate the process.
