ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ANALYSES AT A UNITED STATES ARMY CHEMICAL DEMILITARIZATION FACILITY

The United States Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine provides environmental health risk assessment (HRA) support at Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (ANCDF) for the United States (U.S.) Army Chemical Materials Agency in their mission to dispose of the U.S. chemical agent stockpile. The ANCDF HRA is an example of a multi-faceted risk analysis that is required to periodically be evaluated in order to continue operations under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Air dispersion and deposition modeling was conducted for numerous chemical substances of potential concern. Multiple human and ecological HRA exposure scenarios were developed to assess the direct and indirect health risks associated with startup, shutdown, and upset emissions from ANCDF. This presentation will demonstrate the complexities of the HRA process and discuss some of the methods that have been used to manage them.
