The Effect of Distance from Tablecloth of Operating Table to Floor on Contaminant Distribution in the Operating Room

This study used numerical modeling and simulation test to evaluate the effect of distance from tablecloth of operating table to floor on contaminant distribution in the operating room. The distribution of bacteria concentration was calculated at 0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8m from tablecloth to floor. It was found that the concentration increased with decreasing distance from floor in the operating zone, the surgical site, the patient zone and the operating table zone. Furthermore, a simulation test showed particles equal to and larger than 5 μm increased significantly in the operating table zone when the operating table was covered with a tablecloth trailing on the floor. Therefore, this approach should not be adopted to protect the surgical site.
