Research and Application of Strengthening Agent with Softening Effect by Emulsifier-free Microemulsion Polymerization for Application on Chrome Tanned Leather

Self-made surface-active monomer KMEOL was prepared in the laboratory. Taking transmittance as indirect target, the effects of weight of KMEOL, dosage of free radical initiator and reaction time on the latex particle size were investigated via orthogonal test. The structure of microemulsion strengthening agent with softening effect (SSME) of which solids content was 30% was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The SSME was applied in strengthening treatment for chrome tanned pigskin splits, and the percentage increases of tensile strength, tearing strength and softness was measured. The result of experiment indicated that: when weight of KMEOL was 140g, mixed monomer (m (MMA): m (BA)=1:1) 160g, dosage of persulphate 1.4% with respect to the weight of KMEOL and mixed monomer, reaction time 4 h, the strengthening and softening effect were best. When the dosage of SSME was 5%, the percentage increases of tearing strength and tensile strength was 32.8% and 38.4% respectively, and softness could be improved by 2.2%.
