The conventional landfilling does not promote sustainable waste management due to uncontrolled emissions which potentially degrade the environment. In this regard, pre-treatment of municipal solid waste prior to landfilling significantly enhanced waste stabilization and provides various advantages. So in this regard pre-treatment of municipal solid waste by natural convection of air is adopted. With the biological pretreatment significant amount of easily biodegradable matters and volume of solids are reduced due to the decomposition of the waste. Landfilling of pretreated waste improves landfill behavior, characteristics, and operation. Leachate quality and landfill gas emissions are also reduced. Resultantly increase the landfill age and decrease in aftercare monitoring period. In this study anaerobic landfill simulator was developed to simulate landfill. By natural convection of air pretreated waste is used to study the effects on the landfill. Leachate quality was analyzed for BOD5, COD, NH3-N and pH. Maximum gas generation potential was determined by incubation test. Significant improvement in leachate quality and reduction in landfill gas generation was observed.
