The paper presents a non-combustion measurement method to determine superior calorific value and other gas properties (such as normal density, Wobbe index, methane number, CO2 mole fraction). The method is based on three standard microsensors: one heat conductivity sensor and two infrared sensors. The new measurement method involves significant cost benefits in terms of investment and maintenance compared with conventional methods based on calorimeters or process gas chromatographs (PGCs). This advantage makes the new method attractive for numerous applications in fiscal gas metering (in particular in the case of small gas metering plants) or industrial process control where no accurate and economic measurement technology has been available so far.
