ODORANTS REGULATORY OVERVIEW: SAFETY, HEALTH, AND ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP REQUIREMENTS IN THE U.S.

Existing US regulatory agencies and trade organizations enforce specific measures to ensure the odorant industry follows safety, health, and environmental protection requirements. The principal areas of regulatory responsibility for odorants include transportation and shipping, storage, and hazard assessment. Transportation and shipping regulations are managed by specific agencies dependent on the mode of transportation, e.g. land, sea, or air. Regulations and requirements for storage of odorants include leak detection, permitting, material compatibility, reportable quantities, and the appropriate remediation of spills. Regulations also require that physical and health hazards be identified in order to set occupational exposure limits (OEL) and make appropriate recommendations for personal protective equipment (PPE).
