The demands on magnetic separation in waste water treatment substantially differ from what is known in mineral processing. The particles which have to be removed normally are sensitive to shear stress and contain high amounts of water. Additionally, equipment for waste water treatment has to have high separation efficiencies and low energy consumption. With respect to these demands a new type of carousel separator has been developed using rare earth permanent magnets. In this separator the filter carousel is completely encapsulated so that the filter velocity can be controlled easily. In the separation area of the filter the suspension is re-routed several times. Thus, a long, effective filter length is achieved even in the case of a narrow pole gap. Additionally, the filter realizes a countercurrent principle. This means that the direction of the moving filter matrix and the suspension flow are anti-parallel. A prototype with 400 L/h throughput has been built.
