KORDI conducted a 18 year continous wind wave hindcast from 1978 to 1996 for the area (20-50 N, 120-150 E) to cover the North East Asia Regional Seas. A versatile and interactive data base of hindcast wave data was built to handle large quantities of wave information to provide an accurate and comprehensive information of the long-term wave climate for the NEAR-GOOS region, which is a key factor in the design of offshore and coastal structures and the optimization of marine operations. The methods used to prepare input wind fields, numerical model calibration and verification, and production of long-term hindcast are described in this paper. Three different types of spectral wave models (DSA-5, HYPA, WAM4) are tested by two different common wind fields: one from digitized surface weather maps and the other from numerical model conducted by European Midrange Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The simulated waves are evaluated against time series of field wave data obtained from the wave monitoring system of Korea in order to provide guidance on the quality of the hindcast work. The simulated wave heights are also compared with that obtained from satellite by the radar altimeter prepared by OCEANOR. Ocean wave statistics obtained from satellite observations for East China Sea was compared with that obtained from the long-term wave hindcast. The satellite-derived wave climatology is shown to compare well with that from wave hindcasting. Detailed discussion on the performance of different wave spectral models and satellite remote sensing and their applications are described in this paper.
