摘要

Broadband ISDN using Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) as the transport mode carries traffic of several different classes, each with its own set of traffic characteristics and performance requirements. Bursty traffic can lead to congestion which limit the efficient utilization of network resources. A major challenge in BISDN congestion control is bandwidth management. In this paper, a Fast Bandwidth Reservation scheme with an efficient scheduling method at a switching node in an ATM network serving multiple classes of traffic, is proposed. The effectiveness of such a technique for the flow and congestion control at call admission level is investigated. The performance achievable by its application is evaluated by computer simulation under a particular network model assumption. The gain attainable in terms of improvement in bandwidth utilization and service acceptance in the network is estimated with different traffic source descriptors and network parameter values.
