Mobile microwave scatterometer in support of ERS-1 radar altimeter data analysis

The authors first give a brief introduction to surface backscatter theory. They then describe the requirements of a mobile microwave scatterometer which is to measure the microwave backscattering properties of the Earth's surface. The data it provides will allow better interpretation of satellite radar altimeter data, which has previously been limited by uncertainties about the backscattering characteristics of the surface being observed.
