Polybenzimidazole (PBI)-grafted Graphene supported Pt catalyst have been prepared for PEMFC application. NMR and XPS revealed that PBI have been grafted onto graphene. The Pt nanoparticles decorated on PBI-grafted graphene exhibited uniform distribution with average particle size about 2.3 nm. The PBI-grafted graphene supported Pt catalyst showed a comparable ECSA and ORR activity with commercial Pt/C catalyst, but a much better electrochemical stability. The increase in the stability of catalyst may result from the strong binding of Pt nanoparticles onto PBI-grafted graphene. Consequently, the corrosion of carbon support and leaching of Pt nanoparticles can be significantly suppressed.
