Coal is often considered to be a 'dirty' fuel. While the real concern is readily corrected by coal beneficiation, the issue of CO2 emissions remains but can be improved upon. One way for the latter is to use a coal-biomass mixture for combustion or gasification. When coal is beneficiated by selective oil agglomeration, benefits in that regard are enhanced by the use of bio-oils rather that petroleum-based oils. In this presentation, following a brief overview of the selective oil agglomeration technique, particular aspects arising from the use of oils from vegetable sources will be presented along with some initial results. Oil selection is important, for example the choice of the direct use of vegetable oils or biodiesel made from those oils.
