In this paper, a nonlinear speed control strategy based on improved super twisting algorithm (ISTA) considering lumped disturbance compensation (LDC) is proposed for the control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). A new function is proposed to replace the sign function in super twisting algorithm, which relieves the chattering phenomenon and improves the control smoothness. Moreover, to further improve the dynamic performance of the control system, lumped disturbance compensation is utilized with the load torque estimated online by a discrete reduced order observer. The performance of the proposed control method is analyzed comparatively.
