In many industrial applications, the high fault-tolerant capability of switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machine is required. The short-circuit fault between turns of the armature winding is one of the most common faults in SFPM machines. To prohibit the damage in this machine during the short-circuit fault, the amplitude of the short-circuit current should be limited. Thus, a modular stator and rotor SFPM (MSR-SFPM) machine with lower mutual inductance between armature windings is developed and compared with the conventional E-core SFPM machine in terms of short-circuit current and fault tolerant capability. The electromagnetic performance and short-circuit fault-tolerant capability of MSR-SFPM machine are investigated as well as the conventional SFPM machine. The results indicate that MSR-SFPM machine has lower torque ripple due to the lower short-circuit current during short-circuit fault compared with the conventional SFPM machine.
