Decoloration of Methylene Blue in a Surface/Volume Dielectric Barrier Discharge System

The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system with a combing mode of surface/volume discharge was set up and applied for the decoloration of the methylene blue (MB) solution. The obtained experimental results show that the decoloration percentage increased with the applied voltage and the optimal energy utilization condition for the decoloration was the 5 kV discharge voltage. Analyzing of the solution pH conditions for the decoloration, the neutral solution with initial pH of 6.34 was more conducive to the MB decoloration. With the increase of the initial concentration of the solution, the decoloration percentage increased first and then decreased. The MB decoloration also showed a trend of increase and then decrease by enhancing the air bubbling rate under the condition of lower discharge voltage (4 kV). More H2O2 and O3 were generated when O2 was bubbled into the reaction system.
