The paper gives a brief introduction to particle accelerators and the imaging requirements for particle beams. Ion profile monitoring (IPM) based and beam induced fluorescence (BIF) based techniques for beam profile monitors and associated imaging challenges are further explained. Most imaging applications make use of gases for interaction and generation of images. The challenge of gas flow visualization in vacuum and some of the gas flow measurement techniques are mentioned briefly. Steps to acquire and process schlieren images for gas flowing in vacuum are described in detail. Images obtained at various stages are also shown and discussed.
