Cross-national Features: Network Analysis of Attitudes Towards Immigrants

This study identifies important determinants of attitudes towards immigrants and differences amongst 52 countries, including non-Western and developing countries, using a signed and weighted bipartite network. Projecting this network into two one-mode projections allows for a comparison of how countries differ in their determinants of attitudes and delineates the relationships amongst determinants. This study finds that countries with more positive attitudes tend to have smaller migrant populations, lower incomes, higher post-nationalist identity, and higher prejudice towards homosexuality; however, a significant amount of cognitive dissonance is present in the formation of attitudes.
