The main objective of this work was to study the effect of using Silica Aerogel inside a double glazed window for energy conservation purposes inside buildings. In addition, the attenuation of light caused by the Silica Aerogel will be investigated. The Silica Aerogel was manufactured locally using Teratramethoxysilane (TMOS) and Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS).To achieve this, two identical building modules were manufactured and installed side by side and simultaneously exposed to environmental conditions. Each module was fitted with one window along one side. Silica Aerogel was used as filling material inside the cavity of one module, while the other window is used as a base module for comparison purposes.The temperature readings inside each model together with the ambient temperatures were measured and stored using identical data loggers. In addition, the light intensity inside each module was measured using a lux meter. It was found that, the maximum temperature difference between the two modules may reach as high as 10.4 C°. Finally, the presence of the material caused a maximum light attenuation of 10%.
