With the increase of subsea oil exploitation and the development of world crude oil trade, oil spills frequently occur, causing great hazards to the ecosystem. Therefore, it is of great significance to monitor oil spills timely. The polarization characteristics of detection target can be obtained by using a polarization detection instrument, and the difference of polarization characteristics between seawater and oil film can be used to further improve the accuracy of oil spill monitoring. This paper analyzes the polarization characteristics of oil spills on the sea surface, introduces the basic principles of polarization detection, and preliminarily designs a polarization imaging spectrometer for oil spill detection, whose working band is 350-900nm, focal length is 105mm, F number is 3, and full field Angle is 27.83°. The image quality evaluation of the system shows that the spot diagrams are all smaller than the size of a single pixel, and the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the optical system is greater than 0.48 at the detector's Nyquist frequency 331p/mm. The optical system has no moving parts, and can simultaneously detect the polarization and spectral image information of oil spill.
