In the present paper, we intend to evaluate on the basis of multi-scale permutation entropy (MPE) the complexity of underwater acoustic signals which include ship-radiated noise. Numerical simulation analysis indicates that the MPE method is able to improve the ability to distinguish stochastic noise and deterministic chaotic data. The analysis of real ship-radiated noise is under different environments of heavy rain, light rain and wind. This demonstrates that it has similar behaviour to deterministic chaotic data, and there is a rising trend of entropy values at the small scales which then trend to constant value at 0.91 for the scale of 12. The result also verifies that ship-radiated noise has chaotic characteristics.
