CFD Prediction of Wave-induced Force Acting on a Ship Running in Irregular Stern Quartering Seas

A captive model experiment was conducted for the ONRtumblehomein stern quartering irregular waves. Toward thereplacement of captive model tests by CFD, URaNS simulationsin the same condition with the model experiment are performed.The observed encountered irregular waves are successfullyreproduced in the CFD simulation. Then, the CFD results ofwave-induced hydrodynamic force are compared with the EFDones. As the validation result, it is well demonstrated that theURaNS CFD shows fairly good agreement with EFD even inirregular seas. Similar investigation for more severe waves,including wave breaking and over topping phenomena, isexpected for further validation.
