Phasor measurement units (PMUs) provide real-time synchrophasor data and good situational awareness of power grid, and could be used to take corrective actions to maintain grid reliability. Thousands of PMUs deployed in the North American power grid are supplied by a number of different PMU vendors. Synchrophasor data exchange, sharing and interoperability are major challenges for the power industry. Interoperability testing is one of solutions to assure PMU data interoperability. This paper proposes an interoperability test method for IEEE C37.118 standard-based PMUs. An interoperability test system provided in this paper consists of five parts: a PMU tester, device under test (DUT) (PMU), a network switch, a network sniffer and a PMU interoperability analyzer. IEEE C37.118-2005 provides five test cases. Five test cases of eight commercial PMUs from different vendors have been tested with the PMU Tester over Ethernet. One interoperability test case is described in detail. The interoperability test results of five test cases for each PMU have been provided.
