In this study, we developed a design concept of a tactile compass with non-visual display in smartphones. Directional signals were produced by tactile vibrations when a user touched the smartphone screen. Moreover, this study evaluated the user's non-visual identification performance with the tactile compass. A total of 30 subjects participated in the experiment, which evaluated identification performance. In the experiment, the subject's vision was randomly obscured and disoriented. Subjects had to determine the correct orientation and relative position of objects by using the tactile compass. The results of stimulus and response were recorded for the subjects, showing that the tactile compass can effectively deliver directional signals to subjects and allow them to successfully identify the correct direction. This study contributes to the development of mobile products for the visually impaired and allows users to obtain a stable tactile messaging channel.
